Hi all,  I just picked up a set of 1500A skis.  One bushing is cracked up and will need to be replaced.  Anyone have any ideas on how to correct my problem?  Thanks,  Jim Chuk

You can make your own from a car radiator hose.

How do you guys feel about making the bushing out of UHMW or Teflon?

I've been trying to find a radiator hose size that fits, it seems that the wall thickness is to thin on those that I've found.  Thanks for the reply though.  I wonder if there is some kind of soft epoxy/rubbery material one could mix and pour between the inner and outer sleeves/pipes?  Thanks,  Jim

You can wrap friction tape or something like it under the hose. Buy a tube of windshield urethane and try making a bushing.

Lee I think it needs to be flexible so that the ski's can float around while on the snow. If to rigid it would be " working " the landing gear as the ski adjusts to the surface. My ski tip have about 6" of side to side play. And the soft bushing absorbs some of the banging.

I did see a post with pictures where someone made bushings with UHMW.  It might have been in the archives on this site.  The skis were painted red as I remember.  I found some 2 1/2" OD, 1 1/2" ID UHMW tube on ebay.  1' long piece was about $30 as I remember.  Thanks for the replys.  Jim

I have been using UHMW for a few years now, can't say I have found fault yet. But don't really know.  I never did like the way the skis would move back and fourth at the tip. Makes me think of the guy skiing and he start to do the spits and can't stop. I know all the bushing I have seen where the rubber.  I just wonder why? Is it for a reason or is it because no better bushing material was available? After all we are talking about federals made in the 30-40's.  What are the new guys using, like Aero-ski or Trick-air?

I think the newer skis don't have rubber bushings, just a steel sleeve that slides over the axel.  Jim

I think this has come up before....Unless you find some new bushings hidden on the shelf, it seems every pair has considerable wear.

Many on the forum have used UHMW bushings with good success if you have a lathe or machinist friend.

New Aero Skis have no bushings so that is what I did to my Federals and they have held up fine...Kip Vetterkind in WI machined and welded in my solid steel bushings if he is in your area.

The only consideration of a permanent weld is for resale value as Cubs & Champs and other models have different axel diameters, perhaps making the UHMW the best option.

Best regards,

Doug

Thanks for all the replys guys, I bought a piece of thick wall UHMW tube last night on ebay.  2 1/2" OD, 1 1/2" ID, 1' long, $37.50 shipping included.  I have a lathe, so that looks like the route I'll go.  Thanks,  Jim Chuk

I keep trying to come up with something on the floppy tip thing, but I am laughing to hard.

Jim,

After you give the new bushings a try please log back on and post your results.

Many ski pilots read posts here but don't respond so that information would be useful.

Best regards,

Doug
